Retail investors in Hong Kong can now trade XRP on locally licensed exchange OSL Digital Securities, marking the first time the token has been made available to the city’s non-professional traders through a regulated domestic platform.
OSL confirmed that XRP trading for retail customers went live on 29 July, positioning the exchange as the first in Hong Kong to offer the cryptocurrency to this segment of the market. The move is being closely watched to see whether other licensed platforms in the city will follow with their own XRP listings.
The company said trading for retail clients is available via its Flash Trade service – OSL’s instant trading function – as well as through its over-the-counter (OTC) desk. Retail users are able to access the XRP/USD pair on Flash Trade, while OTC services support both XRP/USD and XRP/HKD pairs.
According to OSL, XRP deposits and withdrawals are processed directly on the XRP Ledger, allowing investors to move tokens on and off the exchange using the network’s native infrastructure.
Wider range for professional traders
While the latest launch is aimed at retail customers, OSL noted that professional investors retain access to a broader set of XRP markets. Institutional and other qualified professional clients can trade XRP/USDT via Flash Trade, with an additional XRP/BTC pair available through OTC channels.
By adding XRP for retail users, OSL is offering Hong Kong-based investors another route into the asset via a regulated local exchange, reducing the need to rely on offshore platforms. OSL Digital Securities operates under a licence issued by Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC).
Regulatory safeguards in focus
Under the SFC regime, licensed virtual asset trading platforms must meet detailed requirements designed to protect investors and ensure market integrity.
Those rules include standards for safeguarding client assets, custody arrangements, anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing controls, and formal token admission criteria. Exchanges are also required to maintain robust cybersecurity defences and market surveillance systems.
Licensed operators must conduct thorough customer due diligence, manage conflicts of interest and implement internal controls intended to curb fraud, market manipulation and the misuse or misappropriation of client funds. Regulators see these safeguards as central to strengthening protections for investors as Hong Kong gradually opens more regulated channels for digital asset trading.
Part of broader XRP rollout
OSL’s decision to extend XRP to the retail market follows earlier steps that brought the token into Hong Kong’s regulated environment for professional participants only.
Previously, Hashkey listed XRP for professional investors, making the asset accessible to institutional and high net-worth clients under Hong Kong’s licensing framework. That move effectively opened XRP to the top end of the market, while OSL’s latest rollout now extends availability to everyday retail traders for the first time through a locally supervised platform.
Expansion backed by fresh capital
The XRP retail launch comes as OSL continues to build out its wider digital asset operations following a significant capital injection earlier in the year.
In January, the company completed a $200m expansion funding round. OSL said the capital is earmarked for acquisitions, the development of payment infrastructure, work on stablecoin-related initiatives and international expansion.
The additional funding is intended to support OSL’s efforts to scale its services as Hong Kong seeks to position itself as a regulated hub for digital assets, with XRP’s newly opened retail trading on the platform seen as one of the latest steps in that broader strategy.
