The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has begun examining plans to extend securities trading around the clock, as financial firms consider how markets could operate outside traditional hours.
The issue was discussed at a Thursday SEC roundtable on expanding securities markets into overnight trading. Participants also considered how the tokenisation of securities could influence the development of longer trading sessions.
The discussion took place on the same morning that the SEC approved tokenized securities.
While traditional financial firms are still assessing the practical implications of longer opening hours, one SEC commissioner contrasted their position with the cryptocurrency sector, whose markets operate continuously.
Crypto markets, the commissioner noted, “don’t sleep.”
