Hunter Biden has revealed the structure of his LAPTOP memecoin, saying the project is intended to turn the controversy surrounding his laptop into a symbol of “resilience, redemption, and recovery”.
The token is due to launch on Wednesday on Base Layer 2, with half of its total supply linked to community distributions, predictions and charitable commitments.
Biden, the son of former United States president Joe Biden, announced the plans in a post on X. He said LAPTOP was created in response to political opponents and media organisations that he believes weaponised the contents of his laptop.
“They turned laptop into a weapon. I turned it into a token,” Biden wrote.
The laptop became one of the major political controversies of the 2020 presidential election after Hunter Biden left the device at a repair shop in Delaware in 2019.
It contained emails relating to his overseas business dealings, financial records and personal material depicting drug addiction. Congressional Republicans later used information from the device to investigate whether Joe Biden had been involved in his son’s business activities.
Joe Biden was not charged. Files taken from the laptop were later used by prosecutors as evidence during Hunter Biden’s 2024 trial, which ended with his conviction on federal firearm charges.
Under the planned tokenomics, LAPTOP will have a total supply of one billion tokens. Twenty per cent will be distributed to the community, with 10% made available at the token generation event through a claim portal operated by the Phoenix Veritas Foundation.
The foundation issues and runs the memecoin. The remaining 10% of the community allocation will be distributed at a later date, at Phoenix Veritas’ discretion.
Two groups will be eligible for the initial airdrop. Investors who suffered losses on Donald Trump’s TRUMP memecoin will be entitled to 2% of the total supply, while subscribers to Hunter Biden’s “Where’s Hunter?” Substack newsletter will receive 8%.
A further 30% of the supply is connected to 30 public real-world predictions. Those include whether President Donald Trump will be impeached during his term and whether the Democrats will take control of the House or Senate in 2026.
Many of the predictions are linked to markets on Polymarket, according to the LAPTOP website. If one of the specified events happens, part of the token supply will be burned. If it does not happen, the corresponding amount will instead be donated to charity.
Biden also said that 50 million additional tokens had been committed to charity “no matter what”.
“You should not expect me or anyone else to make this token more valuable for you,” Biden wrote. “LAPTOP isn’t just about owning something, it’s about saying something.”
Details of the remaining allocation were not included in Biden’s X post, but the memecoin’s official disclosure says 30% will go to founders including Hunter Biden. That share will be subject to a six-month lock-up period, followed by a 24-month vesting period.
A further 10% will be reserved for liquidity, while 5% will be allocated to the Phoenix Veritas Foundation treasury to fund its ongoing operations.
Biden also used the post to criticise Trump’s own memecoin, which he said had left almost one million wallets with collective losses of $3.8bn.
“Trump has broken trust in everything he’s ever touched. And his token was no exception,” Biden wrote.
