Authorities suspect that former RTO constable Saurabh Sharma and his wife, who are currently on the run, may be relying on cryptocurrency to finance their escape. Officials believe the couple could be hiding in either Dubai or Mumbai, using digital currencies to sustain their expenses while evading law enforcement.
The Lokayukta’s Special Police Establishment (SPE) raided two properties linked to Sharma on December 19. However, during the raid, Sharma and his wife disappeared, leaving the authorities struggling to track them down. Despite intensive search efforts, the couple’s whereabouts remain unknown.
The SPE seized cash and gold worth ₹7.98 crore during the operation. However, investigations into the couple’s bank deposits and unopened bank lockers have yet to commence, leaving a significant portion of their financial assets untouched.
Cryptocurrency as a Financial Lifeline
According to individuals familiar with the case, Sharma had amassed vast amounts of wealth through illicit means. This wealth was reportedly funneled into properties, gold, and cryptocurrency investments.
“Not only did the ex-constable amass huge properties and collect gold through black money, but the couple also invested crores in cryptocurrencies. These digital currencies are now proving useful in meeting their expenses while in hiding,” one source revealed.
Cryptocurrency, known for its decentralized and anonymous nature, has increasingly become a tool for fugitives to evade financial tracking.
Family Left Behind in Bhopal
Meanwhile, back in Bhopal, Sharma’s mother and child are residing in their home in Arera Colony. Sources suggest that they are not facing any financial difficulties, raising questions about the extent of the family’s assets and support network.
Director General of the Lokayukta, Jaideep Prasad, stated that efforts to locate the couple are ongoing, with a particular focus on tracking Saurabh Sharma, who is a key figure in the ongoing investigation.
A High-Stakes Manhunt
The case highlights the challenges authorities face in apprehending fugitives who leverage digital currencies to obscure their tracks. With cryptocurrency providing an effective shield against traditional financial monitoring, the hunt for the Sharma couple underscores the growing intersection between technology and law enforcement in combating financial crimes.
As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on unearthing the full extent of Sharma’s alleged corrupt dealings and bringing the fugitive couple to justice.
