EMCD has opened a hashrate-weighted vote among participants in its Bitcoin mining pool to determine how the pool will signal on Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 110 (BIP-110), which would introduce new limits on the storage of arbitrary non-monetary data in Bitcoin transactions.
The vote is intended to gather the views of EMCD’s mining community rather than represent an endorsement of, or opposition to, the proposal. The company said it wants the pool’s position on protocol issues to reflect the collective decision of the miners contributing to the network’s security.
BIP-110 has prompted active debate throughout the Bitcoin ecosystem, with participants holding differing views about its possible consequences. EMCD said the discussion demonstrated the importance of allowing those involved in mining infrastructure to have a direct say in matters affecting the protocol.
All EMCD pool participants are eligible to vote. Ballots will be weighted according to each miner’s contributed hashrate, meaning miners providing greater computing power will have a proportionately larger influence on the result.
When the voting period ends, EMCD said it will adjust the pool’s signalling position in line with the final outcome. Miners can vote for or against BIP-110 through the EMCD platform.
“At EMCD, we do not support the approach proposed in BIP-110, as we believe changes of this kind should not impose additional restrictions on how the Bitcoin network is used. At the same time, our role as a mining pool is to represent our miners – not to override their views. That’s why we’re putting this question to a hashrate-weighted vote and will update our signaling to reflect the decision of the community like it was supposed to work, no matter how mining evolved over the years, even if the outcome differs from EMCD’s own position,” said Konstantin Zherebtsov, General Manager of EMCD Mining Pool.
EMCD said the process reflected its wider approach of neutrality, transparency and decentralisation. Rather than setting a position on behalf of its users, the company is offering what it described as a transparent process through which miners can collectively decide how the pool should signal on a proposal affecting the Bitcoin ecosystem.
