The landscape of cybercrime is evolving rapidly, with a notable surge observed in phishing and cryptocurrency frauds in the first quarter of this year, according to data released by the Mumbai Police.
From January to March 2024, Mumbai Police recorded a total of 1,333 cybercrime cases, marking a significant increase compared to the same period in 2023, which saw 1,205 cases reported. Particularly concerning is the rise in cybercrime-related cheating cases, with 801 incidents registered this year, up from 606 cases in 2023. Amidst these figures, law enforcement efforts have led to the detection of 220 cases and the arrest of 290 individuals.
A detailed examination of cybercrime-related cheating cases reveals a myriad of fraudulent activities. Investment fraud tops the list with 170 cases, followed closely by job fraud with 158 cases. Other prevalent scams include online purchase fraud, fake website fraud, customs/gift fraud, loan fraud, cryptocurrency fraud, insurance/provident fund fraud, and admission fraud.
Of notable concern is the escalating trend in phishing, MIM attacks, and spoofing emails, with 22 cases reported in 2024 compared to 13 cases in the previous year. Similarly, job fraud instances surged from 65 cases in 2023 to 158 cases in 2024, indicating a significant increase in fraudulent employment schemes. Investment fraud and cryptocurrency fraud also witnessed a stark rise, with 170 and 10 cases reported in 2024, respectively, compared to 23 and eight cases in 2023.
While certain cybercrime categories experienced an upward trajectory, others demonstrated a declining trend. Incidents related to obscene emails, SMS, MMS, or posts reduced to 61 cases, down from previous years. Similarly, cases of fake social media profiles, morphing, emails, and SMS decreased to 35, while credit card and online fraud dipped to 318 cases. Fake website scams also saw a marginal decline, with 28 cases reported in 2024.
The Mumbai Police underscored the importance of public vigilance and collaboration in combating cybercrime. As criminals continue to exploit digital platforms for illicit gains, law enforcement agencies emphasize the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures, public awareness campaigns, and swift action to deter and apprehend perpetrators.
