US spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded $517m in inflows on 19 August, their strongest single-day performance since early May, while ether ETFs attracted $189m – their largest daily intake since October 2025, according to SoSoValue data.
The figures underline renewed demand across the cryptocurrency market, helping bitcoin rise above $69,000 and pushing ether 18% higher to about $2,250 in a broad-based rally.
Bitcoin had spent several months trading below $64,000 as ETF flows gradually moved back into positive territory. The latest surge represents the breakout that the improving flow data had been pointing towards during a relatively quiet summer for the market.
Other cryptocurrency investment products also recorded inflows, although on a much smaller scale. Funds linked to XRP and Solana added modest amounts, while Hyperliquid’s product was the only one to register an outflow, at about $2m.
The sharp move higher also put pressure on traders who had bet against the market. Bearish cryptocurrency positions suffered a record $2.7bn in losses as bitcoin approached $70,000.
Such liquidations can accelerate a rally when prices break out of a long-established trading range and leverage has been positioned in the wrong direction. As short positions are closed, often automatically, the resulting buying can add further momentum to the market.
The key question now is whether the latest ETF demand can continue. One day of substantial inflows supports the argument that bitcoin has broken out of its previous range, but it does not yet prove that the move will last. Bitcoin has previously produced false breakouts from the same range.
A second and third consecutive day of ETF purchases at a similar level would provide stronger evidence of the sustained institutional buying that has been absent since spring. However, a rapid reversal in flows would bring the $64,000 area back into focus as a potential support level.
The market’s recent strength comes after a period in which bitcoin was unable to establish a decisive move above its trading range. The return of ETF demand has now become a central focus for investors assessing whether the rally is supported by longer-term institutional interest or is being driven mainly by short-term market positioning.
Zcash upgrade faces wider tests
Zcash’s Tachyon upgrade is intended to expand the capacity of shielded payments and improve the network’s readiness for potential quantum-computing threats.
The upgrade will also test whether Zcash can maintain the funding, security and governance needed to support those ambitions. Its significance therefore extends beyond technical improvements, with the project facing questions over whether its financial backing, protection systems and decision-making structures can withstand the demands placed on them.
The development comes as broader cryptocurrency markets attract renewed attention following the latest ETF flows. While bitcoin and ether have led the current move, the progress of projects such as Zcash will depend on whether their upgrades can deliver both greater functionality and resilience.
