The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI), the emergence of quantum cryptography, and the transformative shifts in social media are set to dominate the tech landscape in 2025. Following a year of significant breakthroughs and challenges, the new year promises to push the boundaries of innovation and reshape global industries.
AI Expansion: Data Centres and Personalised Agents
Artificial intelligence continued to lead innovation in 2024, with groundbreaking achievements such as deciphering fragile 2,000-year-old scrolls. However, 2025 is poised to see AI become even more integral, with the rise of AI-powered agents designed to revolutionize productivity.
“Enterprises are set to have a slew of AI agents, which are semiautonomous, trained models that work across internal networks to help with customer service, human resources, data security, and more,” said Kari Briski, Vice President of Generative AI Software at Nvidia. “Knowledge workers will be more productive because they can tap into a personalised team of AI-powered experts.”
The demand for AI technologies will necessitate an expansion in AI factories and data centres. Charlie Boyle, Vice President of DGX Platforms at Nvidia, predicts a surge in sustainable energy solutions for these power-hungry systems. “Hyperscale cloud providers and large enterprises will lead the way, using liquid cooling in new AI data centres that house hundreds of thousands of AI accelerators,” Boyle noted.
Green AI and Eastern Europe’s Tech Rise
Federico Menna, CEO of EIT Digital, highlighted Europe’s competitive edge in green AI technology. “The big important development for Europe next year will be the continued growth of AI in the sustainability domain in green cleantech,” Menna stated, emphasizing that the region’s focus on climate-related innovation stems from deeply rooted European values.
Eastern Europe, particularly Romania, Poland, and Hungary, is also emerging as a hub for tech advancements, especially in cybersecurity. “Romania is really leading the way, and it’s ‘Google mania’ there,” Menna remarked. Meanwhile, Estonia and Latvia are driving progress in defence technology, spurred by the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Quantum Cryptography: Safeguarding Digital Infrastructure
Quantum computing made headlines in 2024, with Google’s Willow chip achieving computations previously thought impossible. However, the focus for 2025 is on quantum cryptography, a critical field aimed at countering the potential quantum threat to global encryption systems.
“Quantum cryptography will really start emerging because now quantum was always on the verge of becoming the next wave,” Menna said. “This technology will be vital for governments as quantum becomes more relevant.”
Social Media: Shifting Regulations and AI Challenges
The social media landscape is expected to undergo significant changes as privacy concerns and regulatory pressures grow. Nighat Dad, an internet activist, predicts a shift toward user-friendly, privacy-focused platforms. “Users will move on to platforms that are more independent, open source, and have better content moderation policies,” she explained.
While Europe seeks to hold platforms accountable through regulation, the US, influenced by Elon Musk and President-elect Donald Trump, is expected to take a different approach. “The space will be the complete opposite of what the EU is trying to do,” Dad stated, adding that advertisers will increasingly dictate the direction of social media platforms in 2025.
Robotics and Cryptocurrencies: A Glimpse Into the Future
In robotics, 2025 will see the emergence of prototypes capable of independent tasks, though widespread household adoption remains distant. “We will certainly see the first pilot projects in public institutions, care homes, or hospitals,” said David Reger, CEO of Neura Robotics.
Cryptocurrencies, which ended 2024 on a high note, are anticipated to gain wider acceptance and understanding among the general population. “People will worry less about cycles and if it is a bull or bear run as the market will be big enough for companies to thrive,” remarked Pascal Gauthier, CEO of crypto wallet firm Ledger.
As technology continues to evolve at a breakneck pace, 2025 promises to be a defining year for innovations that will shape industries, economies, and societies across the globe.
