A holding of just 0.7 Bitcoin is now worth more than 1 billion rupiah, as Indonesia’s currency trades close to 18,000 to the US dollar.
Crypto commentator Ash Crypto highlighted the calculation on X, with the dollar-rupiah exchange rate around 17,995. At that rate, 0.7 BTC is valued at approximately IDR 1.04 billion.
Measured in US dollars, the holding is worth about $58,000, based on a Bitcoin price of roughly $82,700.
Bitcoin has remained above $80,000 for several weeks, while the rupiah has spent much of 2026 falling to fresh lows against the dollar.
The currency’s decline has been gradual rather than abrupt. IDNFinancials reported that the rupiah closed at a record IDR 17,394 per dollar on May 4, representing a 4.28% fall from its exchange rate of IDR 16,687 at the beginning of the year.
By June 4, the rupiah had weakened beyond the 18,000-per-dollar level for the first time.
Pressure on Indonesia’s currency
Liza Camelia Suryanata of Kiwoom Sekuritas Indonesia said the move beyond 17,300 was “a signal that macroeconomic fundamentals are under pressure”. She also described the government’s 8% growth target as “highly unrealistic”.
The same report said Bank Indonesia left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4.75% on April 22. The decision brought the rupiah back below 17,300 for only two days.
From IDR 16,687 to approximately 18,000, the rupiah has lost nearly 8% of its value against the dollar in less than 10 months. During the same period, savers who held Bitcoin instead of rupiah saw their holdings measured by an asset unaffected by Indonesia’s trade balance.
Historical price data shows Bitcoin began the year at about $87,575, equivalent to roughly IDR 1.46 billion at the time. In dollar terms, Bitcoin is down approximately 5.5% year to date. Against the rupiah, however, it has gained close to 2%, because the Indonesian currency has fallen more quickly than Bitcoin.
Indonesia has a substantial cryptocurrency market. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) said 23.21 million accounts traded crypto during August alone.
Transaction values were also increasing, rising by 12.87% month on month to IDR 23.16 trillion.
That large user base means movements in the rupiah have a direct effect on the local value of crypto assets. Each further fall in the currency increases the rupiah-denominated value of Bitcoin held on Indonesian exchanges, a development likely to attract rapid attention on social media.
Bitcoin briefly climbed above $83,000 on Oct. 20, reaching a daily high of $83,335.
