Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has rallied his fans on social media to help crack the case of the “great cheese robbery,” after £300,000 worth of cheddar was stolen from renowned cheesemonger Neal’s Yard Dairy. The heist, which saw over 950 wheels of cheddar vanish, reportedly involved scammers posing as a French distributor to pull off the colossal cheese fraud.
In an Instagram post, Oliver appealed to his followers, saying, “There has been a great cheese robbery. Some of the best cheddar cheese in the world has been stolen… If anyone hears anything about posh cheese going for cheap, it’s probably some wrong’uns.” The chef humorously mused on the scale of the theft, adding, “I don’t know – it feels like a really weird thing to nick,” questioning the motives of those who made off with 22 tonnes of the prized cheddar.
Neal’s Yard Dairy, a beloved name among cheese connoisseurs, confirmed they had unknowingly delivered the cheddar to an individual falsely claiming to represent a wholesale distributor. The cheesemonger has now urged shops and cheesemongers worldwide to contact them if they come across large quantities of suspicious, unbranded cheddar, especially in 10kg or 24kg blocks with missing tags.
