August delivered broad gains across the cryptocurrency market, but the strongest performers were led by smaller and meme-inspired tokens. non-playable coin (NPC) rose 206% against the U.S. dollar over the past 30 days, making it the market’s biggest gainer as September brought renewed concern over a historically difficult month for bitcoin and other digital assets.
The token, which was trading at $0.01650, outperformed the major cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, ethereum and solana, as well as a number of other assets in the top 20 by market value.
Helium Network’s native cryptocurrency, helium (HNT), recorded the second-largest rise during the period, climbing 188.70%.
The coin linked to the Prometeus Network, prom (PROM), was next among the leading performers after increasing 154.09%. Another meme coin issued on the Bitcoin blockchain, dog (DOG), also enjoyed a strong month, rising 96.65%.
PUMP, the native token of meme coin launchpad platform Pump.fun, gained 96.15%, while the layer two (L2) cryptocurrency stacks (STX) advanced 88.05%.
Curve DAO, the decentralised autonomous organisation that governs Curve Finance, saw its native token CRV rise by 75.48%. The digital asset mina protocol (MINA) was also listed with a 75.48% gain.
The remaining places in the top 10 were taken by convex finance (CVX), which increased 72.40%, and multiversx (EGLD), which rose 71.74% against the U.S. dollar.
The market’s performance was not uniformly positive. Several cryptocurrencies suffered double-digit losses during August, with KAITO recording the sharpest decline after losing 67.87% of its value.
Centrifuge (CFG) fell 40.30%, while the privacy-focused coin zano (ZANO) dropped 24.17%. That contrasted with the performance of other privacy-related cryptocurrencies such as ZEC and XMR.
Jito (JTO) declined 15.06% over the same 30-day period. Ultima (ULTIMA) lost 13.81%, while zigchain (ZIG) fell by about 12.78% from the beginning of August.
Dexe (DEXE) decreased 11.91%, and the digital asset data network, which uses the ticker DATA, fell 11.14%. SOON was the ninth-biggest loser after dropping 10.53%, while the Tron-issued sun token (SUN) declined 10.28%.
The latest gains have also drawn attention to the market’s prospects in September. Bitcoin and the wider cryptocurrency market have historically struggled during the month, which has often been associated with falling prices and liquidations.
Bitcoin has finished September lower in approximately eight of the past 13 years. Altcoins have historically tended to follow bitcoin when it moves downwards, meaning September has so far been a losing month for the market 61.54% of the time. That historical pattern, however, is not certain to continue.
On 2 September, bitcoin’s price fell towards the $76,000 mark after renewed military strikes between the U.S. and Iran. The move came despite the broad gains recorded across the cryptocurrency market during August, underlining the volatility that investors face as the new month begins.
