TechBalance’s flagship US dollar-pegged stablecoin has lost more than 99% of its value after a single exploit drained its bitcoin-backed vaults and exposed fresh concerns over the security of decentralised finance (DeFi) platforms.
The token – known as Balance Coin and designed to hold a steady value of $1 – plunged to around $0.0014 after an attacker manipulated the protocol’s price feed for bitcoin, triggering liquidations that should never have occurred.
The incident, which netted the attacker about $912,000, wiped out almost the entire value of the algorithmic stablecoin in a matter of minutes and inflicted heavy losses on one of the project’s largest backers, a governance collective called 42DAO.
How the exploit unfolded
Investigators say the attack centred on Balance Protocol’s bitcoin price oracle – the mechanism that tells the platform what bitcoin is currently worth.
By feeding the system a fake, artificially low bitcoin price, the attacker made it appear as if vaults holding bitcoin as collateral were under-water and due for liquidation, even though they should have been safely collateralised.
Once those positions were wrongly flagged as unsafe, the system automatically liquidated them. The attacker then stepped in, acquired the mispriced collateral and withdrew the difference – all within a single on-chain transaction.
In effect, the protocol’s own automated safeguards were turned against it, with the oracle failure allowing the attacker to drain bitcoin-backed vaults and leave Balance Coin’s peg in ruins.
Heavy blow for 42DAO and users
While individual users are believed to have been affected, the bulk of the loss appears to have hit 42DAO, the decentralised governance body closely tied to Balance Protocol.
According to on-chain analysis, most of the collateral liquidated during the exploit was associated with 42DAO-managed positions, making the collective the primary victim of the manipulation.
The collapse of Balance Coin’s value has also left ordinary holders facing near-total losses, with the troubled token trading at a fraction of a cent rather than its intended $1 target.
The project has not yet released a full public post-mortem, but developers are expected to face searching questions over how a core piece of infrastructure – the price oracle – could be spoofed so easily.
DeFi security fears in the age of advanced AI
The exploit arrives at a time of growing anxiety about the resilience of DeFi protocols, as increasingly capable artificial intelligence systems broaden the range and sophistication of potential attacks.
Industry figures have warned that AI could accelerate the discovery and weaponisation of smart-contract vulnerabilities and infrastructure weaknesses, from oracles to governance mechanisms.
Recent controlled testing has already highlighted the risks. In one experiment, OpenAI models were able to compromise servers at AI platform Hugging Face, underscoring how autonomous or semi-autonomous systems might be directed towards high-value targets in the crypto ecosystem.
Security analysts say that the Balance Protocol incident may not involve AI directly, but it exemplifies the kind of composable, automated environment that could be systematically probed and exploited by advanced systems.
Wider stablecoin landscape and TRON’s rise
The shock collapse of Balance Coin stands in contrast to the recent consolidation of larger, centralised stablecoins, particularly those issued on the TRON blockchain.
In the second quarter, TRON’s share of the overall stablecoin market climbed to 28.7%, with the supply of USDT (Tether) on TRON alone reaching an all-time high of $89bn.
The network generated about $89m in protocol fees over the period – second only to derivatives platform Hyperliquid – while its native token TRX gained around 3%, supported by what analysts describe as deepening institutional participation and “agentic” use cases.
The juxtaposition highlights a stark divide in the sector: while algorithmic and governance-heavy designs like Balance Coin can offer innovation and decentralisation, they also introduce complex failure modes. Centralised, fiat-backed tokens, by contrast, have so far shown greater stability, though they raise separate regulatory and concentration risks.
Tough questions for algorithmic designs
The collapse of TechBalance’s core stablecoin will intensify scrutiny of algorithmic designs that rely on dynamic collateral and automated liquidations rather than traditional reserves.
Developers across DeFi are likely to face pressure to harden oracle systems, introduce circuit-breakers around liquidations, and stress-test protocols against increasingly sophisticated manipulation techniques.
For users and investors, the message is equally stark: even assets marketed as “stable” can evaporate in value overnight if the systems that underpin them are compromised.
